Exercise 16, § 6

Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, I, 105

Let gg be a subalgebra of gl(n,K)\mathfrak{gl}(n, K) such that the identity representation of gg is semi-simple. Show that every nilpotent matrix X∈gX \in g is contained in a 3-dimensional simple Lie subalgebra of gg. (Show that gg is reductive in gl(n,K)\mathfrak{gl}(n, K); then use Exercises 14 and 15 (c).)
