(a) Let gg be a simple Lie algebra. Every invariant bilinear form on gg is either zero or non-degenerate. If KK is algebraically closed, every invariant bilinear form β\beta on gg is proportional to the Killing form β0\beta_0. (Consider the endomorphism σ\sigma of the vector space gg defined by β(x,y)=β0(σx,y)\beta(x, y) = \beta_0(\sigma x, y) and show that σ\sigma commutes with adgx\mathrm{ad}_g x and is hence scalar.) Show that this result may be false if KK is not algebraically closed. (Use Exercise 17 and the fact that the dimension of the space of invariant bilinear forms does not change when the base field is extended.)

(b) Let gg be a semi-simple Lie algebra over an algebraically closed field. Deduce from (a) and Exercise 7 (b) that the dimension of the space of invariant bilinear forms on gg is equal to the number of simple components of gg and that all these forms are symmetric.

(c) Let gg be a simple Lie algebra, MM the dual space of the vector space gg, with the dual representation of the adjoint representation, and hh the semi-direct product of gg and MM defined by x↦xMx \mapsto x_M. For y,zy, z in gg and y′,z′y', z' in MM, we write β(y+y′,z+z′)=⟨y,z′⟩+⟨z,y′⟩\beta(y + y', z + z') = \langle y, z' \rangle + \langle z, y' \rangle. Show that β\beta is a non-degenerate invariant symmetric bilinear form on hh, which is associated with no representation of hh. (Observe that the radical and nilpotent radical of hh are equal to MM.)
