Suppose that K is algebraically closed. Let gg be a Lie algebra and c its centre.

(a) If gg admits a finite-dimensional faithful simple representation, gg is reductive and dim⁡c≤1\dim c \leq 1.

(b) Conversely, if gg is reductive and dim⁡c≤1\dim c \leq 1, gg admits a finite-dimensional faithful simple representation. (If gg is simple, use the adjoint representation. If g=g1×g2g = g_1 \times g_2 and g1,g2g_1, g_2 admit finite-dimensional faithful simple representations ρ1,ρ2\rho_1, \rho_2 on spaces M1,M2M_1, M_2, show that

(x1,x2)↦ρ1(x1)⊗1+1⊗ρ2(x2) (x_1, x_2) \mapsto \rho_1(x_1) \otimes 1 + 1 \otimes \rho_2(x_2)

is a semi-simple representation ρ\rho of gg, then that the centralizer of the gg-module M1⊗M2M_1 \otimes M_2 reduces to the scalars and hence that ρ\rho is simple. When g1g_1 and g2g_2 are semi-simple or g1g_1 is semi-simple and g2g_2 is commutative, show that ρ\rho is faithful by considering the kernel of ρ\rho which is an ideal of g1×g2g_1 \times g_2.)
