Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let KK be a field of characteristic ≠2\neq 2 and Φ\Phi a non-degenerate symmetric bilinear form on an nn-dimensional vector space over KK.

(a) Show that, if n≥5n \geq 5, the Lie algebra o(Φ)\mathfrak{o}(\Phi) is simple. (By extending the base field, it can be reduced to the case where the index of Φ\Phi is m=[n/2]m = [n/2]. If for example n=2mn = 2m is even, o(Φ)\mathfrak{o}(\Phi) has basis consisting of the elements

Hi=Eij−Ei+m,i+m,Fij=Eij−Ej+m,i+m(1≤i,j≤m,i≠j), H_i = E_{ij} - E_{i+m, i+m}, \quad F_{ij} = E_{ij} - E_{j+m, i+m} \quad (1 \leq i, j \leq m, i \neq j),
Gij′=Ei,j+m−Ej,i+mandGij′′=Ei+m,j−Ej+m,i(1≤i<j≤m); G'_{ij} = E_{i, j+m} - E_{j, i+m} \quad \text{and} \quad G''_{ij} = E_{i+m, j} - E_{j+m, i} \quad (1 \leq i < j \leq m);

then argue as in Exercises 24 and 25. Proceed similarly when n=2m+1n = 2m + 1 is odd.)

(b) Let Δ\Delta be the discriminant of Φ\Phi with respect to a basis. Suppose that n=4n = 4. Show that, if Δ\Delta is not a square in KK, o(Φ)\mathfrak{o}(\Phi) is simple. If Δ\Delta is a square, o(Φ)\mathfrak{o}(\Phi) is the product of two isomorphic 3-dimensional simple Lie algebras. (Use the structure of G(Φ)\mathbf{G}(\Phi) described in Algebra, Chapter IX, § 9, Exercise 16.) Deduce an example of a simple Lie algebra which becomes non-simple when extending the base field.
