Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, III, 392

Let n∈N∗n \in \mathbf{N}^*, pp be a prime number and GG the set of matrices belonging to GL(n,Zp)\mathbf{GL}(n, \mathbf{Z}_p) all of whose elements are congruent to 1 modulo pp if p≠2p \neq 2 (resp. modulo 4 if p=2p = 2). Then GG is an open subgroup of GL(n,Zp)\mathbf{GL}(n, \mathbf{Z}_p).

(a) Show that GG has no element of finite order ≠1\neq 1.

(b) Show that every finite subgroup of GL(n,Zp)\mathbf{GL}(n, \mathbf{Z}_p) is isomorphic to a subgroup of GL(n,Z/pZ)\mathbf{GL}(n, \mathbf{Z}/p\mathbf{Z}) if p≠2p \neq 2 (resp. GL(n,Z/4Z)\mathbf{GL}(n, \mathbf{Z}/4\mathbf{Z}) if p=2p = 2).
