Exercise 8, § 7

Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, III, 394

Let nn be an integer ⩾1\geqslant 1. We write

M(n)=∏llr(l,n), M(n) = \prod_l l^{r(l, n)},
where the product is taken over all prime numbers ll and the r(l,n)r(l, n) are defined as in Exercises 6 and 7. Then M(1)=2,M(2)=23⋅3=24,M(3)=24⋅3=48,M(1) = 2, M(2) = 2^3 \cdot 3 = 24, M(3) = 2^4 \cdot 3 = 48,
M(4)=27⋅32⋅5=5760. M(4) = 2^7 \cdot 3^2 \cdot 5 = 5760.
Deduce from Exercises 6 and 7 that the l.c.m. of the orders of the finite subgroups of GL(n,Q)\mathbf{GL}(n, \mathbf{Q}) (or GL(n,Z)\mathbf{GL}(n, \mathbf{Z}), which amounts to the same) is equal to M(n)M(n). Consider the same question for SL(n,Q)\mathbf{SL}(n, \mathbf{Q}) with M(n)M(n) replaced by 12M(n)\frac{1}{2} M(n).
