Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, III, 395

Let GG be the Hilbert space of sequences (λ1,λ2,…)(\lambda_1, \lambda_2, \ldots) of real numbers such that ∑iλi2<+∞\sum_i \lambda_i^2 < +\infty. Consider GG as a real Lie group. Let GnG_n be the set of (λ1,λ2,…)∈G(\lambda_1, \lambda_2, \ldots) \in G such that λm∈1mZ\lambda_m \in \frac{1}{m} \mathbf{Z} for 1≤m≤n1 \leq m \leq n. The GnG_n are closed Lie subgroups of GG and hence H=⋂nGnH = \bigcap_n G_n is a closed subgroup of GG. But this group is totally disconnected and not discrete and hence is not a Lie subgroup of GG.
