Exercise 15, § 2
Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, IV
We use the hypotheses and notation of Exerc. 10. Assume moreover that the Weyl group W of is finite and denote by the longest element of W (§ 1, Exerc. 22). Two chambers C and are said to be opposed if .
a) Show that if C and C' are opposed, so are C' and C. Show that there exists a chamber opposed to any given chamber C. Show that the stabilizer of a chamber C in G acts transitively on the set of chambers opposed to C.
b) Let C and C' be two opposed chambers. Show that for all , there exists a unique chamber having the following property: if (resp. ) is a reduced decomposition of w (resp. of ), there exists a minimal gallery of type (with ) such that (use Exerc. 22 of §1 and Exerc. 10, d) and e)). Show that and are opposed.
c) Let be the set of pairs of opposed chambers. For , let be the union of the chambers constructed above. Show that I equipped with the set of for is a structured building (, Exerc. 24) and that the Coxeter system and the numbering of I are adapted to ; define a canonical bijection from to the set denoted by in Exerc. 24 of . We identify these two sets.
d) Let with , and let N be the stabilizer of in G. Show that can be identified with W and that is a saturated Tits system (use Exerc. 13).
