Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, IV

We use the notation of no. 2, and assume that kk is commutative. Consider the following cases:

(B_l) n=2l+1n = 2l + 1 (with l≥1l \geq 1), kk is of characteristic ≠2\neq 2 and knk^n is equipped with the quadratic form Q=x1xn+⋯+xlxl+2+xl+12Q = x_1x_n + \cdots + x_lx_{l+2} + x_{l+1}^2; (C_l) n=2ln = 2l (with l≥1l \geq 1) and knk^n is equipped with the alternating form Φ\Phi such that Φ(ei,ej)=0\Phi(e_i, e_j) = 0 for 1≤i≤n,1≤j≤n1 \leq i \leq n, 1 \leq j \leq n and i≤ji \leq j, except when i≤l,j=n+1−ii \leq l, j = n + 1 - i, when Φ(ei,ej)=1\Phi(e_i, e_j) = 1; (D_l) n=2ln = 2l (with l≥2l \geq 2), kk is of characteristic ≠2\neq 2 and knk^n is equipped with the quadratic form Q=x1xn+⋯+xlxl+1Q = x_1x_n + \cdots + x_lx_{l+1}.

Denote by G1G_1 the special orthogonal group SO(Q)\mathbf{SO}(Q) in cases (B_l) and (D_l), and the symplectic group Sp(Φ)\mathbf{Sp}(\Phi) in case (C_l). Put

B1=G1∩B,N1=G1∩NandT1=G1∩T=B1∩N1. B_1 = G_1 \cap B, \quad N_1 = G_1 \cap N \quad \text{and} \quad T_1 = G_1 \cap T = B_1 \cap N_1.

a) Show that the action of N1N_1 on the set of lines keike_i defines a homomorphism from N1N_1, with kernel T1T_1, onto the subgroup W1W_1 of Sn\mathfrak{S}_n, allowing us to identify W1W_1 with N1/T1N_1/T_1. Show that W1W_1 is the subgroup of Sn\mathfrak{S}_n generated by the σj=sjsn−j\sigma_j = s_j s_{n-j} for 1≤j<l1 \leq j < l and by σl=sl−1slsl−1\sigma_l = s_{l-1} s_l s_{l-1} in case (B_l); the σj=sjsn−j\sigma_j = s_j s_{n-j} for 1≤j<l1 \leq j < l and by σl=sl\sigma_l = s_l in case (C_l); the σj=sjsn−j\sigma_j = s_j s_{n-j} for 1≤j<l1 \leq j < l and by σl=sl−1slsl−1slsl+1sl\sigma_l = s_{l-1} s_l s_{l-1} s_l s_{l+1} s_l in case (D_l).

b) Let S1S_1 be the set of σj\sigma_j for 1≤j≤l1 \leq j \leq l. Show that (G1,B1,N1,S1)(G_1, B_1, N_1, S_1) is a Tits system (to prove that the subgroup H of G1G_1 generated by B1B_1 and N1N_1 is the whole of G1G_1, argue as in Algebra, Chap. II, § 10, no. 13), remarking that H contains the lower triangular subgroup of G1G_1 and that, for any ξi∈k\xi_i \in k (2≤i≤n2 \leq i \leq n), there exists a matrix b=(bij)∈B1b = (b_{ij}) \in B_1 such that b11=1,b1i=ξib_{11} = 1, b_{1i} = \xi_i for 2≤i≤n−12 \leq i \leq n-1 and b1n=ξnb_{1n} = \xi_n in case (C_l), and b1n=0b_{1n} = 0 in cases (B_l) and (D_l). Then argue as in no. 2, introducing the subgroups G1,j=G1∩(Gj;Gn−j)G_{1,j} = G_1 \cap (G_j; G_{n-j}) for 1≤j<l1 \leq j < l and the subgroup G1,lG_{1,l} of elements of G1G_1 leaving fixed

the eie_i for i≠l,l+1,l+2i \neq l, l+1, l+2 and the subspace generated by el,el+1e_l, e_{l+1} and el+2e_{l+2} in case (B_l);

the eie_i for i≠l,l+1i \neq l, l+1 and the plane generated by ele_l and el+1e_{l+1} in case (C_l);

the eie_i for i<l−1i < l-1 or i>l+2i > l+2 and the two planes generated by el−1e_{l-1} and el+1e_{l+1} and by e1e_1 and el+2e_{l+2} in case (D_l).

Show that G1,jG_{1,j} can be identified, respectively, with GL(2,k),SL(2,k)\mathbf{GL}(2, k), \mathbf{SL}(2, k) or the special orthogonal group of Exerc. 19).

c) Show that the Coxeter graph of the group W1W_1 is of type (Bl), (C_l) or (D_l) in the three cases (Chap VI, § 4, no. 1).*

d) Show that, for any subset X of S1S_1, the subgroup G1XG_{1X} consists of the g∈G1g \in G_1 such that g(Vi)=Vig(V_i) = V_i for all ii such that σi∉X\sigma_i \notin X, except in case (D_l) where the same assertion is valid provided that Vr−1V_{r-1} denotes the subspace generated by e1,…,er−1e_1, \ldots, e_{r-1} and er+1e_{r+1}. Deduce, as in Exerc. 18 b), that there exists a bijection jj from the building associated to (G1,B1)(G_1, B_1) to the set of totally isotropic subspaces ≠0\neq 0 in cases (B_l) and (C_l), and to the set of totally isotropic subspaces of dimension ≠0\neq 0 and ≠r−1\neq r-1 in case (D_l). Show that points a1,…,aka_1, \ldots, a_k of I belong to the same facet if and only if {j(a1),…,j(ak)}\{ j(a_1), \ldots, j(a_k) \} is a flag.
