Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, IV

Let GG be a group and BB a subgroup of GG.

a) Show that the following conditions are equivalent: (i) B∩gBg−1B \cap gBg^{-1} is of finite index in BB for all g∈Gg \in G; (ii) every double coset BgBBgB with respect to BB is a finite union of left cosets with respect to BB.

More precisely, show that, for all g∈Gg \in G, the index qgq_g of B∩gBg−1B \cap gBg^{-1} in BB is equal to the number of left cosets with respect to BB contained in the double coset BgBBgB. Show that qgh≤qgqhq_{gh} \leq q_g q_h for all g,h∈Gg, h \in G.

Assume from now on that conditions (i) and (ii) are satisfied and denote by kk a commutative ring. For t∈G/Bt \in G/B (resp. t∈B\G/Bt \in B\backslash G/B), denote by ata_t the map from GG to kk defined by at(g)=0a_t(g) = 0 if g∉tg \notin t and at(g)=1a_t(g) = 1 if g∈tg \in t. Let LL (resp. HH) be the kk-module generated by the ata_t for t∈G/Bt \in G/B (resp. t∈B\G/Bt \in B\backslash G/B).

b) Show that there exists a unique linear form μ\mu on LL such that μ(at)=1\mu(a_t) = 1 for all t∈G/Bt \in G/B.

c) Let φ∈L\varphi \in L and ψ∈H\psi \in H. Show that, for all x∈Gx \in G, the map

θx:y↦φ(y)ψ(y−1x) \theta_x : y \mapsto \varphi(y)\psi(y^{-1}x)
belongs to LL and that the map φ∗ψ:x↦μ(θx)\varphi * \psi : x \mapsto \mu(\theta_x) belongs to LL. Moreover, if φ∈H\varphi \in H then φ∗ψ∈H\varphi * \psi \in H. Show that the map (φ,ψ)↦φ∗ψ(\varphi, \psi) \mapsto \varphi * \psi makes HH into an algebra over kk, having aBa_B as its unit element, and makes LL into a right HH-module.

The algebra HH is called the Hecke algebra of GG with respect to HH and is denoted by Hk(G,B)H_k(G, B).

d) Show that, for t,t′∈B\G/Bt, t' \in B \backslash G / B,

at∗at′=∑t′′m(t,t′;t′′)at′′, a_t * a_{t'} = \sum_{t''} m(t, t'; t'') a_{t''},

where m(t,t′;t′′)m(t, t'; t'') is the number of cosets with respect to BB contained in t∩gt′−1t \cap g {t'}^{-1} for all g∈t′′g \in t''.

e) Let GG act on LL by left translations. Show that the action of HH on LL defines an isomorphism from HH to the commutant of the linear representation of GG on LL thus obtained.

f) Assume that GG is finite and that the characteristic of kk does not divide the order of GG. Show that Hk(G,B)H_k(G, B) is absolutely semi-simple over kk (Algebra, Chap VIII, § 7, no. 5) (use Maschke’s Theorem (Chap. V, Appendix) and Prop. 3 of Algebra, Chap. VIII, § 5, no. 1).

g) Assume that GG is a topological group and that BB is a compact open subgroup of GG. Show that conditions (i) and (ii) are satisfied and that, when k=Rk = \mathbf{R} or C\mathbf{C}, the product φ∗ψ\varphi * \psi is simply the convolution product relative to the right Haar measure on GG, normalised by the condition μ(B)=1\mu(B) = 1 (cf. Integration, Chap. VIII, § 4, no. 5).
