Exercise 28, § 2

Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, IV

Let GG be a group, MM a maximal subgroup of GG and UU a normal subgroup of MM, satisfying condition (R) of no. 7. Assume that GG is equal to its commutator subgroup, that it is generated by the union of the conjugates of UU and that the intersection of the conjugates of MM reduces to the unit element. Show that GG is simple. (Consider a normal subgroup NN of GG distinct from {1}\{1\}; show that G=N.MG = N.M and then that G=N.U.G = N.U.)
