Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, IX, 391

Let G be a connected compact Lie group, gg an element of G.

a) Show that there exists an integer n≥1n\geq 1 such that the centralizer Z(gn)Z(g^n) is connected (prove that, for suitable nn, the closed subgroup generated by gng^n is a torus).

b) Assume that the dimension of Ker(Ad gn−1g^n-1) is independent of n(n≥1)n(n\geq 1). Prove that Z(g)Z(g) is connected.

c) If gng^n is regular for all n≥1,Z(g)n\geq 1, Z(g) is connected.
