Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, IX, 394

Let nn be an integer ≥1\geq 1.

a) Show that the group SU(n,C)\mathbf{S}\mathbf{U}(n,\mathbf{C}) is simply-connected (use Exerc. 2).

b) Show that the centre of SU(n,C)\mathbf{S}\mathbf{U}(n,\mathbf{C}) consists of the matrices λ.In\lambda .I_n for λ∈C\lambda \in \mathbf{C}, λn=1\lambda^n= 1.

c) Every almost simple compact Lie group of type AnA_n is isomorphic to the quotient of SU(n+1,C)\mathbf{S}\mathbf{U}(n+ 1,\mathbf{C}) by the cyclic subgroup consisting of the matrices ζk.In+1(0≤k<d)\zeta^k.I_{n+1}(0\leq k < d), where dd divides n+1n+ 1 and ζ\zeta is a primitive ddth root of unity.

d) Prove that the group SL(n,C)\mathbf{S}\mathbf{L}(n,\mathbf{C}) is simply-connected (use Chap. III, §6, no. 9, Th. 6).
