Let H be a closed subgroup of G containing .
a) Show that H is equal to its own normalizer in G, and that is isomorphic to .
b) Show that is stable under W. Conversely, if K is a connected closed subgroup containing T such that is stable under W, the normalizer of K contains that of T.
c) Assume that G is almost simple. Prove that H is equal to (T), or to G, or that we are (up to isomorphism) in one of the following situations:
(resp. ) Spin (resp. ) and is the fixer of a non-zero vector of , isomorphic to Spin (resp. );
and is the subgroup D consisting of the diagonal matrices; and ;
is of type and is isomorphic to Spin;
is of type and is the subgroup (isomorphic to ) defined in Exerc. 7 of §3.
