Let τ:G→SO(n,R)\tau : G\rightarrow \mathbf{S}\mathbf{O}(n,\mathbf{R}) be a real unitary representation of G; denote by φ:\varphi : Spin(n,R)→SO(n,R)(n,\mathbf{R})\rightarrow \mathbf{S}\mathbf{O}(n,\mathbf{R}) the canonical double covering. Then τ\tau is said to be spinorial if there exists a morphism τ~:G→\widetilde{\tau}: G\rightarrow Spin(n,R)(n,\mathbf{R}) such that φ∘τ~=τ\varphi \circ \widetilde{\tau}=\tau.

a) Let Σ\Sigma be a subset of P(T,τ)P(T, \tau ) such that Σ∪(−Σ)=P(T,τ)\Sigma \cup (-\Sigma ) = P(T, \tau ) and Σ∩(−Σ)=∅\Sigma \cap (-\Sigma ) =\emptyset; denote by ωΣ\omega_{\Sigma} the sum of the elements of Σ\Sigma. The class ϖ\varpi of ωΣ\omega_{\Sigma} in X(T)/2X(T)X(T)/2X(T) is independent of the choice of Σ\Sigma. Prove that τ\tau is spinorial if and only if ϖ=0\varpi = 0. b) Prove that ρ∈X(T)\rho \in X(T) if and only if the adjoint representation is spinorial.
