Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, V

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

*Let V be a finite dimensional vector space over a field K, let S be the symmetric algebra of V, and let G be a finite subgroup of GL(V)\mathbf{GL}(V). Assume

that the algebra SGS^G of symmetric invariants of GG is a graded polynomial algebra.

a) Let uu be an element of the dual V∗V^* of VV, and let GuG_u be the subgroup of GG consisting of the elements leaving uu invariant. Show that GuG_u is generated by pseudo-reflections. (The linear form uu extends to a homomorphism fu:S→Kf_u : S \to K. If SuS_u denotes the local ring of SS with respect to the kernel of fuf_u; the ring SuS_u is regular. Conclude by applying Exerc. 7 b) to GuG_u, considered as a group of automorphisms of SuS_u.) In particular, GG is generated by pseudo-reflections.

b) Let AA be a subset of V∗V^*, and let GA=⋂u∈AGuG_A = \bigcap_{u \in A} G_u. Show that GAG_A is generated by pseudo-reflections. (Extending the base field if necessary, we can assume that KK is infinite. Show that in that case there exists an element vv of the vector subspace of V∗V^* generated by AA such that Gv=GAG_v = G_A. Conclude by applying a) to vv.)
