Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, VI

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let RR be a root system of type E7E_7.

a) Put E=Q(R)/2P(R)E = Q(R)/2P(R). This is an F2\mathbf{F}_2-vector space of dimension 6. With the notation in no. 11, show that the scalar product (x∣y)(x|y) defines a non-degenerate alternating bilinear form on EE.

b) Deduce from a) the existence of an exact sequence

1→{1,−1}→W(R)→hSp(6,F2)→1. 1 \to \{1, -1\} \to W(R) \xrightarrow{h} Sp(6, \mathbf{F}_2) \to 1.

(Use the fact that Sp(6,F2)Sp(6, \mathbf{F}_2) is of order 29.34.5.7.2^9.3^4.5.7.)

c) Show that the restriction of hh to W+(R)W^+(R) is an isomorphism from W+(R)W^+(R) to Sp(6,F2)Sp(6, \mathbf{F}_2).

d) Give a second proof of b) by using the quadratic form q7q_7 on the F2\mathbf{F}_2-vector space Q(R)/2Q(R)Q(R)/2Q(R) induced by 12(x∣x)\frac{1}{2}(x|x), as well as the isomorphism

O(q7)→Sp(6,F2). O(q_7) \to Sp(6, \mathbf{F}_2).
