Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let X be a locally connected topological space, C(X)\mathscr{C}(X) the space of continuous real-valued functions on X, and dd an integer ≥0\geq 0. Let F∈C(X)[T]F\in \mathscr{C}(X)[T] be a monic polynomial of degree dd with coefficients in C(X):\mathscr{C}(X):

F=Td+Td−1f1+⋯+fd,fi∈C(X) F = T^d+ T^{d-1}f_1+\cdots +f_d,f_i\in \mathscr{C}(X)

Identify F with a function on R×X\mathbf{R}\times X by putting

F(t,x)=td+td−1f1(x)+⋯+fd(x)F(t, x) =t^d+t^{d-1}f_1(x) +\cdots +f_d(x) if t∈R,x∈Xt\in \mathbf{R}, x\in X.

Let Δ∈C(X)\Delta \in \mathscr{C}(X) be the discriminant of the polynomial F (Algebra, Chap. IV, §1, no. 10).

If U is an open subset of X, denote by ZUZ_U the set of (t,x)(t, x), with t∈Rt\in \mathbf{R} and x∈Ux\in U, such that F(t,x)=0F(t, x) = 0; this is a closed subset of R×U\mathbf{R}\times U.

a) Show that the projection pr2:ZU→U_2: Z_U\rightarrow U is proper (General Topology, Chap. I, §10).

b) Assume that U is connected and that Δ(x)≠0\Delta (x)\not= 0 for all x∈Ux\in U. Show that ZU→UZ_U\rightarrow U is a covering of U (General Topology, Chap. XI) of degree ≤d\leq d, and that the number of connected components of R×U\mathbf{R}\times U-- ZUZ_U is ≤d+1\leq d+ 1.

c) Let X′X' be the set of points of X at which Δ\Delta is ≠0\not= 0. Assume that X′X' is dense in X. Denote by A\mathscr{A} (resp. B\mathscr{B}) the set of connected components of X′X' (resp. of R×X\mathbf{R}\times X-- ZXZ_X). Show that

Card(B\mathscr{B})≤(d+\leq (d+ 1)Card(A\mathscr{A}) (use bb))).

d) Assume that X is connected, and that d≥1d\geq 1. Show that

Card(B\mathscr{B})≤1+d\leq 1 +d Card(A\mathscr{A}).
