Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, VII, 51

Assume that kk is perfect. Let V be a finite dimensional vector space, and u,v∈u, v\in End(V). Let us,un,vs,vnu_s, u_n, v_s, v_n be the semi-simple and nilpotent components of u,vu, v. The following conditions are equivalent: (i) there exists an integer mm such that (ad uu)mv=0^mv= 0; (ii) usu_s and vv commute. (To prove (i) =⇒=\Rightarrow (ii), reduce to the case where kk is algebraically closed and use Lemma 1 (ii).)
