Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let h\mathfrak{h} be a splitting Cartan subalgebra of g\mathfrak{g}, and (Xα)α∈R(X_{\alpha})_{\alpha\in R} a Chevalley system in (g,h)(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{h}), cf. §2, no. 4. If α∈R\alpha \in R, put

θα=eadXαeadX−αeadXα \theta_{\alpha}=e^{adX_{\alpha}}e^{adX_{-\alpha}}e^{adX_{\alpha}}

and denote by W‾\overline{W} the subgroup of Aute(g,h)_e(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{h}) generated by the θα\theta_{\alpha}.

a) Show that ε(W)=W(R)\varepsilon (W) = W(R).

b) Let s∈Ws\in W, and let w=ε(s)w=\varepsilon (s). Show that

s(Xα)=±Xw(α)s(X_{\alpha}) =\pm X_{w(\alpha)} for all α∈R\alpha \in R.

(Use Exerc. 5 of §2.)

c) Let M be the kernel of ε:W‾→W(R)\varepsilon :\overline{W}\rightarrow W(R). Show that M is contained in the subgroup of f(TQ)f(T_Q) consisting of the elements f(φ)f(\varphi ) such that φ2=1\varphi^2= 1. Show that M contains the elements f(φα)f(\varphi_{\alpha}) defined by φα(β)=(−1)⟨β,α∨⟩\varphi_{\alpha}(\beta ) = (-1)^{\langle\beta ,\alpha^{\vee}\rangle} (remark that θα2=f(φα)\theta^2_{\alpha}=f(\varphi_{\alpha})).

d)∗d)^*Let φ∈\varphi \in Hom(Q,{±1},\{\pm 1\}). Show that f(φ)f(\varphi ) belongs to M if and only if φ\varphi extends to a homomorphism from P to {±1}\{\pm 1\}. (Sufficiency follows from the fact that M contains the f(φα)f(\varphi_{\alpha}). To prove necessity, reduce to the case in which k=Qk=\mathbf{Q}, and use the fact that M is contained in f(TQ)∩f(T_Q)\cap Aute(g)=_e(\mathfrak{g}) = Im(TP_P), cf. §7, Exerc. 26d26d).).) Deduce that M is isomorphic to the dual of the group Q/(Q∩2P).13Q/(Q\cap 2P).^{13}\*
