Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, VIII, 233

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

a) Let a∈a\in Aut(g\mathfrak{g}), and n\mathfrak{n} the nilspace of a−1a-1. Show that the following conditions are equivalent:

(i) Ker(a−1a-1) is a Cartan subalgebra of g\mathfrak{g}.

(ii) n\mathfrak{n} is a Cartan subalgebra of g\mathfrak{g}, and a∈a\in Aut0(g)_0(\mathfrak{g}).

(iii) dim n=\mathfrak{n}= rk(g\mathfrak{g}) and a∈a\in Aut0(g)_0(\mathfrak{g}).

b) Assume from now on that kk is algebraically closed. Let V be a vector space, R a root system in V,TQV, T_Q the group Hom(Q(R),k∗, k^*),n,n an integer ≥1\geq 1 and TnT_n the subgroup of TQT_Q consisting of the elements whose order divides nn. Let ζ\zeta be a primitive nnth root of unity in kk. For all H∈P(R∨)H\in P(R^{\vee}), let ψ(H)\psi (H) be the element γ→ζγ(H)\gamma \rightarrow \zeta^{\gamma(H)} of TQT_Q. The map ψ\psi is a homomorphism from P(R∨)P(R^{\vee}) to TnT_n, with kernel nP(R∨)nP(R^{\vee}). Let t∈Tnt\in T_n, and let C be an alcove in P(R∨)⊗RP(R^{\vee})\otimes \mathbf{R}. There exists w∈W(R)w\in W(R) and H∈P(R∨)H\in P(R^{\vee}) such that 1nH∈C\frac{1}{n}H\in C and ψ(wH)=t\psi (wH) =t. (Use Chap. VI, §2, no. 1.)

c) Let h\mathfrak{h} be a Cartan subalgebra of g\mathfrak{g}, and R the root system of (g,h)(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{h}). Let n,ζ,ψn, \zeta , \psi be as in b), and ff as in no. 2. Let H∈P(R∨)H\in P(R^{\vee}). The set of elements of g\mathfrak{g} invariant under f(ψ(H))f(\psi (H)) is h⊕∑α∈R′gα\mathfrak{h}\oplus \sum_{\alpha\in R'}\mathfrak{g}^{\alpha}, where R′R' is the set of α∈R\alpha \in R such that α(H)∈nZ\alpha (H)\in n\mathbf{Z}, and f(ψ(H))f(\psi (H)) satisfies the conditions of a) if and only if 1nH\frac{1}{n}H belongs to an alcove.

d) Assume from now on that g\mathfrak{g} is simple. Let h\mathfrak{h} and R be as in c),(α1,...,αl)c), (\alpha_1, . . . , \alpha_l) a basis of R,hR,h the Coxeter number of R,ζR,\zeta a primitive hhth root of unity in kk, and HH the element of h\mathfrak{h} such that αi(H)=1\alpha_i(H) = 1 for i=1,...,li= 1, . . . , l. Prove the following properties:

(i) The homomorphism γ→ζγ(H)\gamma \rightarrow \zeta^{\gamma(H)} from Q(R) to k∗k^* defines an element of Aut(g,h\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{h}) which satisfies the conditions in a), and has order hh. (Use cc), Chap. VI, §2, Prop. 5 and Chap. VI, §1, Prop. 31.)

(ii) Every automorphism of g\mathfrak{g} of finite order satisfies the conditions in a) and is of order ≥h\geq h.

(iii) The automorphisms of g\mathfrak{g} of order hh satisfying the conditions of a) form a conjugacy class in Aute(g)_e(\mathfrak{g}). (Use Prop. 5 of no. 3.)

e) Let h\mathfrak{h} and R be as in c), and let ww be a Coxeter transformation in W(R). Let s∈s\in Aut(g,h\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{h}) be such that ε(s)=w\varepsilon (s) =w. Show that ss satisfies the conditions in a), and is of order hh. (Use Chap. VI, §1, Prop. 33, Chap. V, §6, no. 2 and Chap. VII, §4, Prop. 9.)

f) If s∈s\in Aut(g\mathfrak{g}), the following conditions are equivalent:

(i) ss satisfies the conditions in a), and is of order hh;

(ii) there exists a Cartan subalgebra h\mathfrak{h} of g\mathfrak{g} stable under ss such that s∣hs|\mathfrak{h} is a Coxeter transformation in the Weyl group of (g,h)(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{h}). (Use dd) and e).)e).)

g) The characteristic polynomial of the automorphism in d) (i) is

A(T)=(T−1)l∏α∈R(T−ζα(H)) A(T) = (T-1)^l\prod_{\alpha\in R}(T-\zeta^{\alpha(H)})

That of the automorphism ss in e) is

B(T)=(Th−1)l∏i=1l(T−ζmi)(miB(T) = (T^h-1)^l\prod_{i=1}^l(T-\zeta^{m_i})(m_i being the exponents of R).

(Use Prop. 33 (iv) of Chap. VI, §1, no. 11.) Deduce from the relation A(T) = B(T) that, for all j≥1j\geq 1, the number of ii such that mi≥jm_i\geq j is equal to the number of α∈R+\alpha \in R_+ such that α(H)=j\alpha (H) =j; hence recover the result of Exerc. 6 c) of Chap. VI, §4.124.^{12}
