Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VII, § 4. Regular elements of a Lie group

Let kk be a field of characteristic 0 and g\mathfrak{g} a Lie algebra over kk. If a∈a\in Aute(g)_e(\mathfrak{g}), the dimension of the nilspace of a−1a-1 is greater than or equal to the rank of g\mathfrak{g}.

By the “Lefschetz principle” (Algebra, Chap. V, §14, no. 6, Cor. 2 of Th. 55),k,k is an ascending directed union of subfields (ki)i∈I(k_i)_{i\in I} which admit C\mathbf{C} as extension field. Let (eα)(e_{\alpha}) be a basis of g\mathfrak{g} over kk and x1,...,xmx_1, . . . , x_m elements of g\mathfrak{g} such that ad(x1x_1),..., . . ., ad(xmx_m) are nilpotent and a=ead(x1)...ead(xm)a=e^{ad(x_1)}. . . e^{ad(x_m)}. Let cαβγc^{\gamma}_{\alpha \beta} be the structure constants of g\mathfrak{g} with respect to the basis (eα)(e_{\alpha}) and (xrα)(x^{\alpha}_r) the components of xrx_r with respect to this basis (1≤r≤m)(1\leq r\leq m). There exists an index j∈Ij\in I such that the cαβγc^{\gamma}_{\alpha \beta} and the xrαx^{\alpha}_r all belong to kjk_j. Let gj=∑αkjeα\mathfrak{g}_j=\sum_{\alpha}k_je_{\alpha};

this is a Lie algebra over kjk_j containing x1,...,xmx_1, . . . , x_m, and the restriction aja_j of aa to gj\mathfrak{g}_j is an elementary automorphism of gj\mathfrak{g}_j. The extension of aja_j to gj⊗kjC\mathfrak{g}_j\otimes_{k_j}\mathbf{C} is an elementary automorphism aj⊗1a_j\otimes 1 of gj⊗C\mathfrak{g}_j\otimes \mathbf{C}. So let GjG_j be a connected complex Lie group with Lie algebra gj⊗C\mathfrak{g}_j\otimes \mathbf{C}, and ss an element of GjG_j such that Ad(ss) =aj⊗1=a_j\otimes 1. Prop. 8, applied to the pair (Gj,s)(G_j, s), shows that the nilspace of aj⊗1−1a_j\otimes 1-1 is of dimension nn, so

n≥n\geq rk(gj⊗C\mathfrak{g}_j\otimes \mathbf{C}) == rk(gj\mathfrak{g}_j) == rk(g\mathfrak{g}).

But this nilspace has the same dimension as that of aj−1a_j-1 and that of a−1a-1. Hence the proposition.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
