Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VIII, § 5. Automorphisms of a semi-simple Lie algebra

Let h\mathfrak{h} be a splitting Cartan subalgebra of g\mathfrak{g}, and s∈s\in Aut0(g,h)_0(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{h}). Assume that the restriction of ss to ∑α∈Rgα\sum_{\alpha\in R}\mathfrak{g}^{\alpha} does not have 1 as an eigenvalue.

Then ε(s)=1\varepsilon (s) = 1.

By extension of kk, we are reduced to the case where s∈s\in Aute(g,h)_e(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{h}). The dimension of the nilspace of s−1s-1 is at least dim h\mathfrak{h} (Chap. VII, §4, no. 4, Prop. 9). Hence (s−1)∣h(s-1)|\mathfrak{h} is nilpotent. Since s∣h∈A(R∨),s∣hs|\mathfrak{h}\in A(R^{\vee}),s|\mathfrak{h} is of finite order, and hence semi-simple (Chap. V, Appendix, Prop. 2). Consequently, (s−1)∣h=0(s-1)|\mathfrak{h}= 0, which proves that ε(s)=1\varepsilon (s) = 1.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
