If A is any subset of a topological space X, let α(A) denote A˙ and β(A) denote A˙. Then A⊂B implies α(A)⊂α(B) and β(A)⊂β(B).
a) Show that if A is open then A⊂α(A), and that if A is closed then β(A)⊂A.
b) Deduce from a) that if A is any subset of X, then α(α(A))=α(A) and β(β(A))=β(A).
c) Give an example of a set A (on the real line) such that the seven sets A,A˚,A,α(A),β(A),β(A),α(A˚) are all distinct and satisfy no relations of inclusion except the following: A˚⊂A⊂A,A˚⊂α(A˚)⊂β(A)⊂A,A˚⊂α(A)⊂β(A)⊂A,α(A˚)⊂α(A),β(A)⊂β(A).
d) Show that if U,V are two open sets such that U∩V=∅, then also α(U)∩α(V)=∅ [use b)].
