Exercise 5, § 1

General Topology, I, 118

If AA is any subset of a topological space XX, the frontier of AA is denoted by Fr(A)\mathrm{Fr}(A).

a) Show that Fr(A‾)⊂Fr(A),Fr(A˚)⊂Fr(A)\mathrm{Fr}(\overline{A}) \subset \mathrm{Fr}(A), \mathrm{Fr}(\mathring{A}) \subset \mathrm{Fr}(A), and give an example on the real line where these three sets are distinct.

b) Let A,BA, B be two subsets of XX; show that

Fr(A∪B)⊂Fr(A)∪Fr(B) \mathrm{Fr}(A \cup B) \subset \mathrm{Fr}(A) \cup \mathrm{Fr}(B)
and give an example on the real line where these sets are distinct. If A‾∩B‾=∅\overline{A} \cap \overline{B} = \varnothing, show that Fr(A∪B)=Fr(A)∪Fr(B)\mathrm{Fr}(A \cup B) = \mathrm{Fr}(A) \cup \mathrm{Fr}(B).

c) If AA and BB are open in XX, show that

(A∩Fr(B))∪(B∩Fr(A))⊂Fr(A∩B) (A \cap \mathrm{Fr}(B)) \cup (B \cap \mathrm{Fr}(A)) \subset \mathrm{Fr}(A \cap B)
⊂(A∩Fr(B))∪(B∩Fr(A))∪(Fr(A)∩Fr(B)) \subset (A \cap \mathrm{Fr}(B)) \cup (B \cap \mathrm{Fr}(A)) \cup (\mathrm{Fr}(A) \cap \mathrm{Fr}(B))
and give an example on the real line where these three sets are distinct.
