Exercise 9, § 1

General Topology, I, 119

Let XX be a set and let M→M‾M \to \overline{M} be a mapping of P(X)\mathfrak{P}(X) onto itself such that: 1) ∅=∅‾\varnothing = \overline{\varnothing}; 2) for every M⊂XM \subset X we have M⊂M‾M \subset \overline{M}; 3) for every M⊂XM \subset X we have M‾‾=M‾\overline{\overline{M}} = \overline{M}; 4) for all M⊂XM \subset X and N⊂XN \subset X we have

M∪N‾=M‾∪N‾. \overline{M \cup N} = \overline{M} \cup \overline{N}.
Show that there is a unique topology on XX such that M‾\overline{M} is the closure of MM with respect to this topology, for all M⊂XM \subset X (define the topology by means of its closed sets).
