Exercise 10, § 10

General Topology, I, 151

Let X,YX, Y be two topological spaces. A correspondence (G,X,Y)(G, X, Y) between XX and YY (Set Theory, Chapter II, § 3, no. 1) is said to be proper if the restriction of the projection pr2pr_2 to the graph GG is a proper mapping G→YG \to Y.

a) Let f:X→Yf : X \to Y be a mapping. Show that ff is continuous if and only if the correspondence f‾\overline{f} between YY and XX is proper, and that ff is a proper mapping if and only if the correspondences f‾\overline{f} (between YY and XX) and ff (between XX and YY) are proper. Hence construct an example of a non-continuous mapping ff such that the correspondence ff is proper.

b) If (G,X,Y)(G, X, Y) is a proper correspondence, show that G(A)G(A) is a closed subset of YY whenever AA is a closed subset of XX.
