Exercise 12, § 10

General Topology, I, 151

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

a) A correspondence (G,X,Y)(G, X, Y) is proper if and only if, for every topological space ZZ and every correspondence (E,Z,X)(E, Z, X) whose graph EE is closed in Z×XZ \times X, the graph G∘EG \circ E is closed in Z×YZ \times Y. First to show that the condition is necessary, remark that G∘EG \circ E is the image of (E×Y)∩(Z×G)(E \times Y) \cap (Z \times G) under iZ×pr2:Z×G→Z×Yi_Z \times pr_2 : Z \times G \to Z \times Y. To show sufficiency, let δY\delta_Y be the diagonal mapping Y→Y×YY \to Y \times Y; show that, for each subset FF of (Z×Y)×X(Z \times Y) \times X, the inverse image of G∘FG \circ F under the mapping

ιZ×δY:Z×Y→Z×Y×Y \iota_Z \times \delta_Y : Z \times Y \to Z \times Y \times Y
is the image, under the mapping (y,z)↦(z,y)(y, z) \mapsto (z, y), of the set
pr⁡23−1(F‾∩(G×Z)), \operatorname{pr}_{23}^{-1}(\overline{F} \cap (G \times Z)),
where F‾\overline{F} is the image of FF under the mapping (z,y,x)↦(x,y,z)(z, y, x) \mapsto (x, y, z). b) Deduce from a) that the composition of two proper correspondences is a proper correspondence. c) Let (G,X,Y)(G, X, Y) be a proper correspondence. Show that if XX is Hausdorff then GG is closed in X×YX \times Y.
