Exercise 13, § 10

General Topology, I, 152

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let XX be a locally compact space and YY any topological space. a) Show that the following four statements are equivalent: α)\alpha) (G,X,Y)(G, X, Y) is a proper correspondence between XX and YY. β)\beta) For each Hausdorff space X′X' which contains XX as a subspace, GG is closed in X′×YX' \times Y. γ)\gamma) GG is closed in X×YX \times Y, and for each y∈Yy \in Y there is a neighbourhood VV of yy in YY and a compact subset KK of XX such that (X−K)×V(X - K) \times V does not meet GG. δ)\delta) There is a compact space X′X', containing XX as a subspace, such that GG is closed in X′×YX' \times Y. [To prove that α)  ⟹  β)\alpha) \implies \beta) use Exercise 12 a) and c). To show that δ)  ⟹  α)\delta) \implies \alpha), use Proposition 2 of no. 1 and Corollary 5 of Theorem 1 of no. 2.]

b) Show that if (G,X,Y)(G, X, Y) is proper, then: ζ)\zeta) For every compact subset LL of YY, G‾(L)\overline{G}(L) is a compact set. Show also that if YY is locally compact and if GG is closed in X×YX \times Y and satisfies ζ)\zeta), then (G,X,Y)(G, X, Y) is proper. [Use the equivalence of α)\alpha) and γ)\gamma).] This last assertion is no longer valid when YY is Hausdorff but not locally compact (Exercise 4).
