Exercise 6, § 10

General Topology, I, 150

Let XX be a space which is the sum of subspaces Xi(i∈I)X_i (i \in I), and let ff be a continuous mapping of XX into a topological space YY. For each i∈Ii \in I, let fi:Xi→Yf_i : X_i \to Y be the restriction of ff to XiX_i. Show that ff is proper if and only if each of the fif_i is proper and the family (f(Xi))i∈I(f(X_i))_{i \in I} is locally finite [use Theorem 1 d)].
