Exercise 7, § 10

General Topology, I, 150

Let f:X→X′f : X \to X' be a proper mapping and let RR (resp. R′R') be an equivalence relation on XX (resp. X′X') with which ff is compatible. Let f‾:X/R→X′/R′\overline{f} : X/R \to X'/R' be the mapping of the quotient spaces induced by ff. Suppose that (i) the image under ff of every saturated set with respect to RR is saturated with respect to R′R', and (ii) R′R' is open. Show that in these conditions f‾\overline{f} is proper [use Theorem 1 c)].
