Bourbaki

Exercise 9, § 10

General Topology, I, 151

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

a) Let X,YX, Y be two topological spaces and f:X→Yf : X \to Y a surjective closed (but not necessarily continuous) mapping. Show that if f‾−1(y)\overline{f}^{-1}(y) is quasi-compact for each y∈Yy \in Y, then f‾−1(K)\overline{f}^{-1}(K) is quasi-compact for each quasi-compact subset KK of YY (either prove the result directly or else use Exercise 7 of § 5 and Exercise 12 of § 9).

b) Suppose in addition that XX is regular. Show that if f‾−1(y)\overline{f}^{-1}(y) is closed in XX for each y∈Yy \in Y, then f‾−1(K)\overline{f}^{-1}(K) is closed in XX for each quasi-compact subset KK of YY (same methods). If also YY is locally compact then ff is continuous.
