Exercise 13, § 11

General Topology, I, 157

It is set in small type as supplementary.

Let θ\theta be an irrational number. Let ff be the mapping of the real line R\mathbf{R} into the torus T2\mathbf{T}^2 for which the image f(t)f(t) of each t∈Rt \in \mathbf{R} is the canonical image in T2\mathbf{T}^2 of (t,θt)∈R2(t, \theta t) \in \mathbf{R}^2. ff is injective and continuous. Show that, in the topology on R\mathbf{R} which is the inverse image under ff of the topology of T2\mathbf{T}^2, R\mathbf{R} is connected but no point of R\mathbf{R} has a fundamental system of connected neighbourhoods.*
