Bourbaki

Exercise 14, § 11

General Topology, I, 157

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

a) Let XX be a locally compact and locally connected space, and let AA be a closed subset of XX. Let A∗A^* be the union of AA and the components of CACA which are relatively compact. AA is said to be full if A∗=AA^* = A. Show that A∗A^* is closed and full.

b) Suppose in addition that XX is connected. Show that if AA is a compact subset of XX, then A∗A^* is compact (consider a compact neighbourhood VV of AA and the components of CACA which meet the frontier of VV).

c) Suppose in addition that XX is connected and σ\sigma-compact. Show that there exists an increasing sequence (Kn)n≥0(K_n)_{n \geq 0} of full connected compact sets whose union is XX and which are such that Kn⊂Kn+1K_n \subset K_{n+1} for all nn.

d) Show that the conclusion of b) is no longer valid if we suppose only that XX is connected and locally compact, or that XX is Hausdorff, connected and locally connected. [Consider the subspace of R2\mathbf{R}^2 consisting of points (x,y)(x, y) such that either y=0y = 0 and 0≤x≤10 \leq x \leq 1, or else y>0y > 0 and x=1/nx = 1/n where nn is an integer >0> 0].
