Bourbaki

Exercise 15, § 11

General Topology, I, 157

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let XX be a connected, locally connected space. a) Let M,NM, N be two disjoint non-empty closed subsets of XX. Show that C(M∪N)C(M \cup N) has a component whose closure meets both MM and NN. [If CC is a component of C(M∪N)C(M \cup N) whose closure does not meet MM, observe that CC is both open and closed in CNCN]. b) If AA is a closed subset of XX distinct from XX, deduce from a) that every component of AA meets the closure of CACA.
