Exercise 2, § 11

General Topology, I, 155

a) Let XX be a topological space and T\mathfrak{T} the topology of XX. Show that if XX is connected in the semi-regular topology T∗\mathfrak{T}^* associated with T\mathfrak{T} (§ 8, Exercise 20), then XX is connected in the original topology T\mathfrak{T}. Deduce that there exist connected submaximal spaces (§ 8, Exercise 22).

*b) In particular construct a topology on the real line R\mathbf{R}, with respect to which R\mathbf{R} is connected but no point of R\mathbf{R} has a fundamental system of connected neighbourhoods [cf. Chapter IV, § 2, Exercise 14 c)].
