Bourbaki

Exercise 22, § 11

General Topology, I, 160

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

a) Show that in an extremally disconnected space every open subspace and every dense subspace is extremally disconnected.

b) Let XX be a Hausdorff space in which every point has a neighbourhood which is an extremally disconnected subspace of XX. Show that XX is extremally disconnected.

c) Give an example of a Hausdorff space XX which is not extremally disconnected but which has an extremally disconnected dense open subspace (paste together two extremally disconnected spaces).

d) Let XX be a countable discrete space, X~\tilde{X} the (compact) space of ultrafilters on XX (§ 9, Exercise 26). Let (An)n∈N(A_n)_{n \in \mathbf{N}} be a countably infinite partition of XX into infinite subsets; in the closed subspace Y=X~−XY = \tilde{X} - X of X~\tilde{X}, the sets Bn=X~n∩YB_n = \tilde{X}_n \cap Y are open and closed and pairwise disjoint. Let B=⋃nBnB = \bigcup_n B_n; show that the closure B‾\overline{B} of BB in YY is not open in YY, and hence that YY is not extremally disconnected (*). (Use reductio ad absurdum: using Exercise 20, let CC be an open and closed subset of X~\tilde{X} such that C∩Y=B‾C \cap Y = \overline{B}; consider a point xnx_n in each of the sets C∩AnC \cap A_n, let J‾\overline{J} be the closure of the set JJ of points xnx_n, and show that J‾\overline{J} does not meet BB).

(*) Exercises 21 h) and 22 d) are due to R. Ricabarra.
