Exercise 24, § 11

General Topology, I, 161

Let XX be a topological space. a) Let the set P0(X)\mathfrak{P}_0(X) carry one of the topologies TΩ,TΦ\mathfrak{T}_\Omega, \mathfrak{T}_\Phi (§2§ 2, Exercise 7) or TΘ\mathfrak{T}_\Theta (§8§ 8, Exercise 12). Show that if a subset B\mathfrak{B} of P0(X)\mathfrak{P}_0(X) is connected and if each M∈BM \in \mathfrak{B} is connected, then ⋃M∈BM\bigcup_{M \in \mathfrak{B}} M is connected. b) Let S\mathfrak{S} be a subset of P0(X)\mathfrak{P}_0(X) which contains the set of all finite non-empty subsets of XX. Show that if XX is connected then so is S\mathfrak{S} [use Exercise 7 b) of §2§ 2 and Proposition 8 of §4§ 4, considering the mappings (x1,…,xn)→{x1,…,xn}(x_1, \ldots, x_n) \to \{ x_1, \ldots, x_n \}].
