Exercise 3, § 11

General Topology, I, 155

Let A,BA, B be two subsets of a topological space XX.

a) Show that if AA and BB are closed in XX, and A∪BA \cup B and A∩BA \cap B are connected, then AA and BB are connected. Show by an example that this statement is no longer necessarily true when one of the sets A,BA, B is not closed.

b) Suppose that AA and BB are connected and A‾∩B≠∅\overline{A} \cap B \neq \varnothing. Show that A∪BA \cup B is connected.
