Bourbaki

Exercise 4, § 11

General Topology, I, 155

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let XX be a connected space of at least two points.

a) Let AA be a connected subset of XX, BB a subset of CA\mathbf{C}A which is both open and closed in CA\mathbf{C}A. Show that A∪BA \cup B is connected. (Apply Exercise 5 of § 3 to Y=A∪BY = A \cup B and Z=CAZ = \mathbf{C}A.)

b) Let AA be a connected subset of XX and BB a component of the set CA\mathbf{C}A. Show that CB\mathbf{C}B is connected [use a)].

c) Deduce from b) that there exist two connected subsets M,NM, N of XX which are distinct from XX and such that M∪N=XM \cup N = X and M∩N=∅M \cap N = \varnothing.
