General Topology, I, 119

Let X,X′X, X' be two topological spaces, ff a bijection of XX onto X′X': then a necessary and sufficient condition for ff to be a homeomorphism

(*) For an example of a space which satisfies (DIV)(D_{IV}) but neither (DII)(D_{II}) nor (DIII)(D_{III}), see §8§ 8, Exercise 6 b). For an example of a space satisfying (DII)(D_{II}) and (DIII)(D_{III}), but not (DI)(D_I), see Chapter IX, §5§ 5, Exercise 16. For examples of spaces where one of the two conditions (DII),(DIII)(D_{II}), (D_{III}) is satisfied but not the other, see §9§ 9, Exercise 23.

\* In a metrizable space, (DI)(D_I) and (DIV)(D_{IV}) are equivalent: Proposition 12 of Chapter IX, §2§ 2, no. 8 shows that (DI)(D_I) and (DII)(D_{II}) are equivalent; on the other hand, if (DIV)(D_{IV}) is satisfied, then for each integer n>0n > 0 there is a maximal countable family Bn=(Bnm)m≥0\mathfrak{B}_n = (B_{nm})_{m \geq 0} of mutually disjoint balls of radius 1/n1/n; whose union is dense. The countable set of centres of the BnmB_{nm} is then dense. \* of XX onto X′X' is that the topology of X′X' is the finest for which ff is continuous.
