Exercise 8, § 2

General Topology, I, 121

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let XX be a set, and cc a cardinal number which is either infinite or equal to 1. The set of subsets of XX consisting of XX and those M⊂XM \subset X such that card⁡(M)<c\operatorname{card}(M) < c is the set of closed subsets of XX for a topology Tc\mathfrak{T}_c; T1\mathfrak{T}_1 is the coarsest topology on XX and Tc\mathfrak{T}_c is the discrete topology if c>card⁡(X)c > \operatorname{card}(X). Every permutation of XX is an automorphism of the topological space obtained by giving XX a topology Tc\mathfrak{T}_c.

Show that conversely any topology T\mathfrak{T} on XX, which has the property that every permutation of XX is continuous with respect to T\mathfrak{T}, is necessarily one of the topologies Tc\mathfrak{T}_c. [Let cc be the smallest cardinal such that card⁡(F)<c\operatorname{card}(F) < c for each closed subset F≠XF \neq X in the topology T\mathfrak{T}; observe that when XX is infinite and c>card(X)c > \mathrm{card}(X), T\mathfrak{T} is necessarily the discrete topology.]
