Exercise 9, § 2

General Topology, I, 122

a) With the hypotheses of Proposition 4 of no. 3, show that the coarsest topology on XX for which the fif_i are continuous is also the finest topology T\mathfrak{T} on XX which has the following property: every mapping gg of a topological space ZZ into XX such that the fi∘gf_i \circ g are continuous is continuous (with respect to G\mathfrak{G}).

b) With the hypotheses of Proposition 6 of no. 4, show that the finest topology on XX for which the fif_i are continuous is also the coarsest topology T\mathfrak{T} on XX which has the following property: every mapping gg of XX into a topological space ZZ such that the g∘fig \circ f_i are continuous is continuous (with respect to T\mathfrak{T}).
