Exercise 11, § 3

General Topology, I, 124

Let XX be a topological space, T\mathfrak{T} the topology of XX, AA a dense subspace of XX. Show that the set of topologies on XX which are finer than T\mathfrak{T}, in which AA is dense in XX, and which induce the same topology as T\mathfrak{T} on AA, has at least one maximal element; such a maximal element is called an AA-maximal topology. Show that a topology T0\mathfrak{T}_0 on XX is AA-maximal if and only if every subset MM of XX, such that A∩MA \cap M is dense in MM (with respect to T0\mathfrak{T}_0) and open in AA, is open in the topology T0\mathfrak{T}_0, and that the subspace CACA is then discrete in the topology induced by T0\mathfrak{T}_0, and is closed in XX. Show also that if T0\mathfrak{T}_0 is AA-maximal and if the topology induced by T0\mathfrak{T}_0 on AA is quasi-maximal (§ 2, Exercise 6) then T0\mathfrak{T}_0 is quasi-maximal.
