Exercise 15, § 3

General Topology, I, 124

It is set in small type as supplementary.

Consider the following three subspaces of R\mathbf{R}: X1=]−1,1[X_1 = ] - 1, 1[, X2=]−2,−1[,X3=]1,2[X_2 = ] - 2, - 1[, X_3 = ] 1, 2[. Let XX be their union; XX is then the sum of these three subspaces. Let A2A_2 (resp. A3A_3) be the set of irrational numbers contained in X2X_2 (resp. X3X_3); let B1B_1 (resp. B2B_2) be the set of rational numbers contained in ]—1,0[1, 0[ (resp. X2X_2); and let C1C_1 (resp. C3C_3) be the set of rational numbers contained in ]0,1[0, 1[ (resp. X3X_3). Let X/RX/R be the space obtained by pasting together the XiX_i (i) along A2A_2 and A3A_3 by means of the homeomorphism x→x+3x \to x + 3; (ii) along B1B_1 and B2B_2 by means of the homeomorphism x→x−1x \to x - 1; (iii) along C1C_1 and C3C_3 by means of the homeomorphism x→x+1x \to x + 1. Show that the canonical image of X1X_1 in X/RX/R is not homeomorphic to X1X_1. If Y=X1∪B2∪C3Y = X_1 \cup B_2 \cup C_3 is the saturation of X1X_1 with respect to RR, show that the quotient space Y/RYY/R_Y is not homeomorphic to the canonical image of YY in X/RX/R. \*
