Exercise 4, § 3

General Topology, I, 123

Let Y,ZY, Z be two subspaces of a topological space XX such that X=Y∪ZX = Y \cup Z and such that A‾∩B=B‾∩A=∅\overline{A} \cap B = \overline{B} \cap A = \varnothing, where A=Y∩∁ZA = Y \cap \complement Z and B=Z∩∁YB = Z \cap \complement Y.

a) Show that if MM is any subset of XX then the closure of MM in XX is the union of the closure of M∩YM \cap Y in YY and the closure of M∩ZM \cap Z in ZZ. Deduce that if M∩YM \cap Y is closed (resp. open) in YY and M∩ZM \cap Z is closed (resp. open) in ZZ, then MM is closed (resp. open) in XX.

b) Let ff be a mapping of XX into a topological space X′X'. Show that if f∣Yf|Y and f∣Zf|Z are continuous then so is ff.
