Exercise 2, § 4

General Topology, I, 125

Let X,YX, Y be two topological spaces, AA a closed subset of X×YX \times Y. If B(x)\mathfrak{B}(x) is the set of all neighbourhoods of a point x∈Xx \in X, show that

⋂V∈B(x)A(V)‾=A(x). \bigcap_{V \in \mathfrak{B}(x)} \overline{A(V)} = A(x).
Give an example of an open subset BB of a product X×YX \times Y such that
⋂V∈B(x)B(V)‾ \bigcap_{V \in \mathfrak{B}(x)} \overline{B(V)}
is different from B(x)‾\overline{B_{(x)}}.
