Exercise 3, § 4

General Topology, I, 125

Let (Xi)i∈I(X_i)_{i \in I} be an infinite family of topological spaces such that each XiX_i contains (at least) two distinct points ai,bia_i, b_i such that there is a neighbourhood of bib_i which does not contain aia_i. a) For each index x∈Ix \in I, let cxc_x be the point of the product space

X=∏k+1Xi X = \prod_{k+1} X_i
for which pr⁡xcx=bx\operatorname{pr}_x c_x = b_x and pr⁡icx=ai\operatorname{pr}_i c_x = a_i whenever i≠xi \neq x. Show that every point of the set CC of points cxc_x is isolated. b) Deduce from a) that the topology of XX has a countable base if and only if II is countable and the topology of each XiX_i has a countable base (use Exercise 7 of § 1).

c) Show that if the index set II is not countable then the point b=(bi)b = (b_i) of XX has no countable fundamental system of neighbourhoods.
