Bourbaki

Exercise 5, § 4

General Topology, I, 126

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let KK be the discrete space consisting of the two numbers 0,10, 1; let AA be an infinite set and let XX denote the product space KP(A)K^{P(A)}.

a) Let JJ be any finite subset of AA; suppose JJ has pp elements. For each subset HH of JJ, let MHM_H be the set of subsets LL of AA such that L∩J=HL \cap J = H; the MHM_H form a partition ω~J\tilde{\omega}_J of P(A)P(A) into 2p2^p subsets. Let FJF_J be the subset of XX consisting of those points (xL)L⊂A(x_L)_{L \subset A} such that xL=xMx_L = x_M whenever LL and MM belong to the same set of the partition ω~J\tilde{\omega}_J. FJF_J is a finite set, with 22p2^{2^p} elements. If FF is the union of the FJF_J as JJ runs through all finite subsets of AA, show that FF is equipotent to AA.

b) Show that FF is dense in XX. Taking A=NA = \mathbf{N}, deduce that XX satisfies condition (DII)(D_{II}) of § 1, Exercise 7, but does not satisfy condition (DIII)(D_{III}) (Exercise 4).
