Exercise 5, § 5

General Topology, I, 128

Let XX be a topological space and let R,SR, S be two equivalence relations on XX such that RR implies SS.

a) Show that if SS is open (resp. closed) then S/RS/R is an open (resp. closed) equivalence relation on X/RX/R; show also that the converse is not necessarily true. Show that SS can be open (resp. closed) but not RR.

b) Suppose that RR is open (resp. closed). Show that S/RS/R is open (resp. closed) if and only if SS is open (resp. closed).
